“Production Day 1. It’s real, folks.” With this caption and a behind-the-scenes photo, showrunner Brad Caleb Kane confirmed that filming for Crystal Lake officially began on Friday, June 20, 2025. The series, a prequel to the legendary Friday the 13th franchise, is being produced by Peacock and A24, and it’s already shaping up to be a defining return to slasher territory.
Adding to the franchise’s deep lore, the production is operating under the working title “Mama’s Boy”—a nod that hardcore fans will immediately recognize as both eerie and perfectly appropriate.
Back to Where It All Began
Set decades before Jason’s hockey mask became a horror icon, Crystal Lake explores the dark unraveling of Pamela Voorhees, portrayed by Linda Cardellini. She’s described as “a mother who gave up a singing career to raise a special needs child and spirals into violence after a devastating loss.”
The first episode is directed by Michael Lennox (Derry Girls), with Maceo Bishop (The Watcher, The Curse) serving as cinematographer. The eight-episode season will also feature directors Celine Held & Logan George (Caddo Lake) and Quyen Tran (The Pitt).
New Faces, Familiar Shadows
Joining Cardellini are:
-
William Catlett as Levon Brooks
-
Devin Kessler as Briana Brooks
-
Gwendolyn Sundstrom as Grace
-
Cameron Scoggins as Officer Dorf — a recast of the original motorcycle cop played by Ron Millkie in the 1980 film.
According to Kane, Dorf is “one of many” returning elements from the original movie, with more legacy surprises on the way.
Why “Mama’s Boy” Hits Different
The title Mama’s Boy isn’t just a wink — it cuts deep. In Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981), final girl Ginny theorizes that Jason survived as a feral child, living in isolation, driven by grief and emotional dependence on his mother. This foundational trauma has always been key to understanding Jason’s murderous psyche. Now, it’s getting the spotlight.
After 16 Years, Jason Stirs Again
Crystal Lake marks the franchise’s return to screen after more than a decade in limbo due to a prolonged legal battle between Victor Miller and Sean S. Cunningham. With rights now stabilized, Horror Inc., Miller, and Marc Toberoff are pushing forward in collaboration with A24.
And while Jason may still be lurking beneath the surface, Crystal Lake brings his origin story into sharper, more tragic focus.
