The “Friday the 13th” prequel series pushes forward! Read the latest information about the new Bryan Fuller project.
After enduring a rocky path paved with legal battles and production delays, “Crystal Lake” is finally setting the stage to bring chilling new tales from the depths of Camp Crystal Lake. The series is spearheaded by Bryan Fuller, known for his darkly inventive narratives in “Hannibal” and “Star Trek: Discovery.” Fuller, along with an impressive team comprising Stephen Dodson and iconic “Scream” writer Kevin Williamson, plans to thread early stories that set the stage for the massacre lore that fans are familiar with.
Victor Miller, the original scribe of the original “Friday the 13th,” triumphed in a significant legal skirmish over the rights to his screenplay, reclaiming the ability to use key elements from the 1980 horror staple. This victory is pivotal for “Crystal Lake,” as it allows the inclusion of Pamela Voorhees and the original settings of the notorious camp. However, fans will note the absence of the adult, masked Jason Voorhees—a figure synonymous with the series but tied up in rights owned by Sean S. Cunningham and Horror Inc.
In an innovative twist, the series will not feature the grown, hockey-masked Jason we’ve come to fear. Instead, the narrative will explore his origins, alongside his mother Pamela, digging deeper into the eerie backstory that led to the infamous curse of Camp Crystal Lake. Bryan Fuller teases the unlimited possibilities of the series, stating to Fangoria, “We can use everything. We can go to Hell, we can go to space. That’s not to say that we will do those things … although if we do go 10 seasons, I will be lobbying hard to go to space.”
