‘Friday the 13th’ creator Sean S. Cunningham reveals potential release date for TV Series and teases new video game.

At Silver Scream Con in Worcester, MA this past weekend, ‘Friday the 13th’ creator Sean S. Cunningham shared updates about the long-awaited TV series Crystal Lake and teased future projects within the franchise, including a potential video game.

Cunningham revealed that production for Crystal Lake could begin by the end of 2024, with a potential release on Halloween 2025. “Last I heard, they’re talking about shooting it in Australia at the end of this year and releasing on Halloween 2025,” he shared. However, Cunningham tempered expectations, stating, “But I’ve heard versions of that story for so long, I don’t put a lot of credibility into it. There’s just so many things that can go sideways.

The journey to bring Crystal Lake to life has been challenging, with legal disputes over the rights to the original script being a significant obstacle. “Some time ago, the rights expired on the original script, so then there became doubt about who owns what after 35 years. That was being worked out by lawyers,” Cunningham explained. These issues, combined with the global pandemic, delayed the series for years.

After several stops and starts, A24 joined forces with Peacock to finally bring the series to fruition. Initially, Bryan Fuller was hired as showrunner, but creative differences led to his departure. “They started to set up the writers’ room, and they didn’t like the road he was going down. They felt it was gonna be too dark,” Cunningham said. Fuller was replaced by Brad Caleb Kane, who is now spearheading the series.

Cunningham also reflected on a scrapped sequence from a previous Friday the 13th TV series concept. The scene, which never made it to production, involved a group of kids playing hockey on an icy lake with Jason Voorhees guarding the net. “Jason’s pissed. He starts chopping at the kids and the ice starts to crack,” Cunningham chuckled. Although the scene was later revealed as a viral video prank within the storyline, Cunningham expressed his disappointment at not being able to film it.

In addition to Crystal Lake, Cunningham hinted at more Friday the 13th content on the horizon, particularly in the realm of video games. “There always seems to be a desire to have another Friday the 13th movie, which would have a distinct life from the TV series. For sure, Jason’s gonna show up in more video games.” The 2017 Friday the 13th: The Game was a major hit, and fans can expect Jason to return to consoles in new ways.

With Crystal Lake potentially arriving by Halloween 2025 and new projects on the horizon, fans of Jason Voorhees have much to look forward to as the iconic slasher continues to haunt screens in both TV and gaming.
